Google Paid $2.4 Billion for Windsurf Talent

Varun Mohan's move to Google is the result of unsuccessful negotiations with OpenAI, which attempted to buy Windsurf for $3 billion. Varun Mohan was born in India and earned both a bachelor's and a master's degree in computer science from MIT. Before founding Windsurf, he worked at Nuro, a company specializing in autonomous vehicles. Under his leadership, Windsurf became known for advanced AI tools that simplify software development and gained recognition as a major player in AI infrastructure.

Douglas Chen, another Windsurf co-founder, will also join Google as part of the deal. Jeff Wang, who led Windsurf's business operations for two years, took over as interim CEO.

Windsurf and the "Vibe Coding" Revolution

Over the past year, Windsurf has gained popularity as a platform for so-called "vibe coding" (intuitive programming), a process that uses the latest AI tools to write code. This transaction intensifies the AI talent war among leading companies. Meta recently made lucrative job offers to several OpenAI employees. The most notable is the addition of Scale AI founder Alexandr Wang, who will lead Meta's AI strategy as part of a $14.3 billion investment in his startup.

Meanwhile, Microsoft is enhancing agent mode in its Visual Studio Code editor for intuitive programming. In April 2025, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said that AI generates up to 30% of his company's code.

The Future of Windsurf

Most of Windsurf's world-class team will continue developing the Windsurf product with the goal of maximizing its impact in the enterprise sector, Jeff Wang wrote in a post on X. Shortly after the departures of Varun Mohan and Douglas Chen, Windsurf was acquired by Cognition, confirming the rapid succession of major changes for the startup.
