Google made SynthID Detector available to everyone worldwide on October 7, 2026, with the tool offered in English. The company says people can use it to check whether an image, video or audio file was created with AI from Google or supported partners.
From media professionals to public access
Google introduced an early version of the detector in 2025 for media professionals to verify AI-generated content. The expanded access now opens the tool to other users.
Google names OpenAI, NVIDIA and Kakao among its supported partners. The company says the detector can check images, video and audio files created with those partners’ AI as well as its own tools. Apple support is expected soon.
Identifying media through imperceptible watermarks
The underlying technology is SynthID, which Google launched in 2023. The company says it helps identify AI-generated media through imperceptible watermarks embedded in images, video and audio.
Google says more than 180 billion images and videos have received these watermarks to date. The company puts the total duration of watermarked audio at 240,000 years.
The detector complements verification in Gemini, Chrome and Search
Google says SynthID Detector complements the verification features built into Google Search, the Gemini app and Chrome. Those features now regularly process more than one million requests a day, according to the company.
