Google launches Guided Learning in Classroom, plans Search pilot

Google made Guided Learning available worldwide in Google Classroom on November 3, 2026, and announced plans to bring the educational feature to student accounts in Search. Teachers can assign it in Classroom as an individual study tool; in Search, it is designed to help students work through problems step by step.

Classroom activities based on class materials

In Classroom, a student starts a Guided Learning activity assigned by their teacher. The tool draws on material covered in class and supports individual study. Google says it also gives teachers ongoing information to help them identify where the class may need more support.

Guided Learning is already available in Gemini, where it uses open-ended questions and breaks problems into steps. Google says its research found measurable improvements in student learning outcomes with the tool.

Search is designed to guide students step by step

Google is developing the Search feature for student accounts. When its systems recognize certain types of requests for homework help, the feature is designed to guide students through a topic or problem step by step rather than take them directly to an answer.

Google cites examples of a student pasting a complex physics problem or asking for help writing a book report. The student is meant to receive prompts that encourage critical thinking and understanding of the concepts involved.

The pilot is scheduled to begin later in November at selected US schools. Google wants to collect and incorporate educator feedback before expanding to other school districts in the following months.

School administrators will control access

Google is also preparing a change to settings for K–12 student accounts. Access to Gemini, Gemini Notebook, Gemini in Classroom and Search will be switched off until school administrators explicitly enable it. The company plans to share details with schools in the coming months before the changes take effect.
