Figma: A Comprehensive Tool for Design and Prototyping

Before we delve into the new features, let us recall why Figma is already the dominant tool in the field of digital product design. Figma functions as a cloud platform for user interface design, which in recent years has changed the way designers and developers collaborate. Key features offered by Figma include:

  • Real-time collaborative design: Multiple designers can work on the same file simultaneously.
  • Comprehensive prototyping: Creating interactive prototypes with transitions and animations.
  • Design systems and libraries: Managing and sharing styles, components, and patterns across teams.
  • FigJam: An integrated tool for whiteboarding and brainstorming.
  • Dev Mode: A special mode for developers that facilitates implementing designs into code.
  • Rich plugin ecosystem: Extending functionality with hundreds of third-party plugins.
  • Component variants: The ability to create and manage different component states in one place.
  • Variables: A system of variables that enables sharing values across the design.
  • Auto Layout: Intelligent management of element layouts that simulates CSS behavior.

Thanks to these features, Figma has gained enormous popularity among designers, developers, and product teams around the world. Companies such as Microsoft, Uber, Airbnb, Twitter, and thousands of others use Figma as their primary tool for design and prototyping.

Introducing Figma Sites: A Bridge Between Design and the Web

At the Config 2025 conference, which took place last week, Figma announced a groundbreaking product called Figma Sites. This new feature enables designers to directly convert designs from Figma into functional websites without the need for coding. This is an important step in Figma's long-term strategy to eliminate the gaps between design and development. As Dylan Field, Figma's CEO, stated: "Figma Sites represents our vision of a future where everyone is able to create for the web, regardless of their technical skills. We want to democratize web design in the same way we changed the world of user interface design."

According to official materials available on Figma's blog and the release notes from the Config 2025 conference, the new product brings the following groundbreaking features:

  • Direct export from design to web
Figma Sites allows designers to export their designs directly into a functional website with minimal effort. The system intelligently converts layers and components from designs into corresponding HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. "Our machine-learning-based algorithm analyzes the structure of the design file and creates clean, optimized code that respects the designer's original intent," explains product manager Lisa Chen.
  • Effortless responsive design
One of the most significant features is the automatic creation of responsive websites. Figma Sites can interpret different designs for different screen sizes and generate a website that smoothly adapts to all devices.
  • Built-in hosting and publishing
Users can publish their websites with a single click on the sites.figma.com domain or connect a custom domain. Figma provides hosting, SSL certificates, and a global CDN for fast page loading anywhere in the world.
  • Visual CMS
Another new feature is an integrated content management system that allows nontechnical users to update text, images, and other content without having to republish the entire website.
  • Integration with existing CMSs and databases
Figma Sites offers the ability to connect with popular CMSs such as WordPress, Contentful, or Sanity, as well as database systems such as Airtable or Supabase.

According to information from the release notes of the Config 2025 conference, Figma Sites fully integrates with existing Figma tools:

  • Component libraries: You can use an existing Design System directly to create web pages.
  • Variables: You can now use variables from Figma Design throughout the entire website.
  • Prototyping: Interactions defined in prototypes are automatically converted into web interactions.
  • Collaborative editing: Just as with design files, web pages can also be edited in real time by multiple users simultaneously.

New Competition in the Market

With the launch of Figma Sites, the company is entering an already existing market of no-code website creation tools and creating direct competition for several established players:

Webflow
Figma Sites represents a direct challenge to Webflow, which in recent years has become the standard for visually creating professional websites. While Webflow has the advantage of a mature ecosystem and years of experience, Figma brings integration with a design process that millions of users are already familiar with. Sarah Drasner, former director of development at Webflow, remarked on social media: "Figma Sites is a fascinating step. Webflow still has the lead in advanced features and flexibility, but the direct integration of design and web within a single platform is a very strong offering."

Adobe
Adobe, with its portfolio including XD, Dreamweaver, and the recently acquired Framer, will face stronger competition. Figma, which already resisted Adobe's acquisition attempt in 2022, is now further strengthening its position as a comprehensive solution for digital design.

Framer, Wix, and other website builders
Framer, which, like Figma, allows users to convert designs into functional websites, will have to respond to this significant move. Likewise, platforms such as Wix, Squarespace, and other website creation tools will have to reassess their position given that Figma already has an established user base of millions of designers.

Pricing and Availability

Figma Sites will be available at three levels:

  1. Free tier: For personal projects, limited to 3 pages and publishing under sites.figma.com
  2. Professional: $15/month per user, including unlimited pages, custom domains, and advanced analytics tools.
  3. Organization: $45/month per user, adding enterprise features such as SAML, audit logs, and extended access management.

According to the official schedule, Figma Sites will be available in beta to all Professional and Organization plan subscribers from June 1, 2025, with a full release planned for August 2025.

Figma Sites is a shift in how designers and developers collaborate on web projects. By removing technical barriers, Figma continues its mission to democratize design and enable everyone to create digital products. As Dylan Field concluded his keynote at Config 2025: "We believe that the future of creating for the web will be more visual, more accessible, and more collaborative. Figma Sites is our contribution to that future."
