Baidu Enters the Battle with ERNIE 4.5 and X1: China’s Answer to GPT-4.5 at a Fraction of the Price
At a time when it seemed that American companies led by OpenAI and their GPT-4.5 model were setting the pace in the field of artificial intelligence, Chinese technology giant Baidu is entering the scene with a pair of models that could significantly shake up the global AI market. ERNIE 4.5 and ERNIE X1 are not merely another iteration of language models – they represent a strategic move through which Baidu demonstrates that it can offer cutting-edge AI technology at a fraction of the cost of its competitors.
Who Is Behind the ERNIE Models: Baidu and Its AI Ambitions
Baidu, often nicknamed the "Chinese Google", was founded in 2000 by Robin Li and Eric Xu. The company began as an internet search engine, but over the course of two decades it transformed into a technology giant with interests spanning many fields. With a market value of more than 45 billion dollars, it is one of China’s most significant technology companies. In recent years, Baidu has invested heavily in artificial intelligence – from autonomous driving (the Apollo project) to cloud services and, in particular, language models. The ERNIE (Enhanced Representation through kNowledge IntEgration) series represents the flagship of these efforts. While the Western world is primarily familiar with ChatGPT and Claude, ERNIE Bot dominates in China, and it has now received two major updates. "Our goal is to democratize access to advanced artificial intelligence and make it available to the widest possible range of users," said Robin Li, CEO of Baidu, when introducing the new models. "We believe that AI should not be a luxury product, but a tool available to everyone."
ERNIE 4.5: A Multimodal Model with GPT-4.5-Level Performance at 1% of the Price
ERNIE 4.5 represents a true breakthrough in the price-to-performance ratio. It is an advanced multimodal model that natively works with text, images, audio, and video. It can interpret complex content, including internet memes, satirical cartoons, and subtle linguistic nuances – areas where many models still struggle. What is most remarkable, however, is that according to benchmarks, ERNIE 4.5 outperforms GPT-4.5 on many tasks, at just 1% of its price. While using GPT-4.5 costs approximately $10 per million output tokens, ERNIE 4.5 costs around $0.10.

"When we first saw the pricing policy, we thought it was a typo," comments Jan Novák, an analyst specializing in the AI market. "Baidu is effectively launching a price war that Western companies will find difficult to ignore." Technically, the model benefits from several innovations that Baidu developed specifically for ERNIE 4.5:
- FlashMask – a dynamic attention-masking system that dramatically increases the efficiency of processing long data sequences.
- Heterogeneous multimodal mixture-of-experts architecture – enables better integration of different types of data (text, images, audio).
- Spatiotemporal representation compression – a technology that makes working with video and audio more efficient.
Practical applications range from analyzing documents (DOC/PDF/PPT/Excel) and solving mathematical problems from images with detailed explanations to generating images based on text descriptions.
ERNIE X1: A Specialized Model for Deep Reasoning
While ERNIE 4.5 is a versatile model for a broad range of tasks, ERNIE X1 is a specialized version focused on deep reasoning and solving complex problems. The model excels at advanced logical tasks, mathematics, and complex coding. "We designed ERNIE X1 for users who need more than just text generation – they need a partner for genuine thinking," explains Haifeng Wang, Baidu’s chief technology officer. "The model can break complex problems down into steps, explain its logic, and use various tools to achieve a result." The model integrates a wide range of tools: a search engine, the ability to query documents, image understanding and generation, web page reading, mind map creation, and more. What is remarkable is that the model can transparently explain its reasoning process, which is a valuable feature especially in business, research, and legal contexts.
Price and Availability
In terms of price, ERNIE X1 competes with the DeepSeek-R1 model, but at half the cost. Input prices start at just RMB 0.002 per thousand tokens (approximately $0.28 per million tokens), representing an aggressive pricing strategy the AI market has never seen before. Baidu is fundamentally changing the rules of the game with its pricing policy. Both models are free for individuals through the ERNIE Bot platform, while prices for corporate use are drastically lower than those of Western competitors. "It is as if someone started selling luxury cars at the price of a used one," says Pavel Horák, an AI implementation consultant for businesses. "Models such as GPT-4.5 were financially inaccessible to many small and medium-sized businesses. ERNIE effectively removes this barrier."
Baidu’s strategy is clear – rapidly expand its user base and secure a significant share of the global AI market. Although both models currently have limited availability outside China (primarily due to language and account restrictions), they represent a significant challenge to the dominance of Western models. Furthermore, according to available information, Baidu plans to open-source these models in the middle of the year, which could make access to advanced AI technology even more widespread.
Further Plans for the Future?
Despite their impressive specifications and revolutionary pricing policy, the ERNIE models face several challenges. The first is the language barrier – although the models support English, their primary development focused on Chinese. This may affect the quality of output in other languages, including Czech. The second challenge is the geopolitical situation – growing tensions between China and Western countries could complicate the wider adoption of these models outside the Asian region. In addition, there are concerns about data security and potential access by Chinese authorities to information processed by these models. "Technologically, these are impressive products, but companies must ask themselves whether they are ready to entrust their data to a Chinese company," warns Markéta Nováková, a cybersecurity expert. "For European and American companies in particular, this could pose a regulatory challenge."
The Future Competitive Battle
Baidu’s ERNIE 4.5 and ERNIE X1 models, combining cutting-edge performance with unprecedentedly low prices, could catalyze much broader adoption of AI technologies across various sectors and geographic regions. For OpenAI, Anthropic, and other Western companies, this represents a challenge to which they will have to respond – either by lowering prices or by offering features and service quality that justify the price difference. One thing is certain – the era in which advanced AI was a luxury available only to large corporations with deep pockets is rapidly coming to an end. And Baidu is one of the main architects of this change.
