OpenAI, led by CEO Sam Altman, is preparing significant changes to the ChatGPT system. These changes are intended to restore the more human touch to the artificial intelligence that users appreciated in the older GPT-4o model. In his post on X, Sam Altman admitted that the new GPT-5 model underwent a dramatic change that limited its ability to work with information and altered the way it communicates. The reason was an effort to protect users with mental health issues, for example from the risk of suicide. However, OpenAI now promises that the empathetic approach will return, thanks to improved safety tools.
Erotic Content for Adults
The biggest new development is a plan to allow erotic content for verified adult users. Sam Altman announced this at the end of his longer post on X, where he said that the company would soon begin treating adult users appropriately. This means partially lifting the censorship that has so far prohibited any sexual material. The change will take effect in December 2025 and will be available only to those who prove that they are of legal age. OpenAI plans to introduce age verification systems and strengthen parental controls to protect younger users.
We made ChatGPT pretty restrictive to make sure we were being careful with mental health issues. We realize this made it less useful/enjoyable to many users who had no mental health problems, but given the seriousness of the issue we wanted to get this right.

Now that we have…
OpenAI emphasizes that these changes are possible thanks to advances in safety tools and content moderation. The company wants to balance adults’ creative freedom with responsible use. Sam Altman explained that the new principles will make it possible to better protect vulnerable groups, while adults will gain access to content appropriate for their age. In the past, the system’s capabilities were restricted because of risks associated with mental health, but OpenAI now claims that it has better solutions for these threats.
The risks include debates about ethics, consent, and societal values, but OpenAI promises that it will continue to monitor misuse. The company has not yet specified which types of erotic content will be permitted, but it is focusing on striking a balance between freedom and safety.
