Who among us hasn't experienced that feeling when you're sitting over an Excel spreadsheet, staring at a tangle of formulas and asking yourself: "Why isn't this working again?" OpenAI has decided to cut this everyday struggle short. The company has launched a beta version of ChatGPT for Excel, and things are starting to change quite significantly.
This isn't just a simple chatbot stuck to the side of the screen. It's an add-in that integrates directly into your workbook, understands formulas, links between worksheets, and the logic of the entire model. And it is powered by the new GPT-5.4 model, which OpenAI has specifically fine-tuned for financial and analytical tasks.
How do you add ChatGPT to Excel?
Installation is easy. In Excel, open the Extensions → Add-ins menu, search for ChatGPT, and sign in with your OpenAI account. From then on, you'll have a new button on the ribbon, and a chat panel will open next to the spreadsheet.
What next? Simply type what you need. For example: "Create a discounted cash flow model for me" or "Why do I have an error in cell B145?" ChatGPT will process it, create or modify a live Excel model directly in your workbook, while preserving your existing formulas and formatting. It asks for permission before every change, so nothing disappears without your knowledge.
This is important. ChatGPT links its answers to the specific cells it references. You can see exactly what it changed and why. If you don't like the result, you can undo the changes with a single click.
GPT-5.4: A Model That Understands Finance
The performance is powered by the new GPT-5.4 Thinking model. OpenAI tested it on its own internal investment banking benchmark, which simulates real-world workflows such as building a three-statement financial model with proper formatting and citations. The results are impressive: while the original GPT-5 achieved a score of 43.7%, GPT-5.4 Thinking jumped to 87.3%. That's a leap analysts will genuinely notice in practice.
The model can handle financial modeling, scenario analysis, data extraction, and lengthy research reports. Tasks that previously took an analyst an entire day now take a fraction of that time.
Availability
The beta version is available to users on Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu plans. Support for Google Sheets is coming soon.
OpenAI's honesty is refreshing: the company openly acknowledges the limitations. VBA macros, Power Query, pivot tables, and Office Scripts are not yet supported. With very large workbooks, not all data may fit into the model's context window. Some responses may take longer or require manual formatting adjustments.
ChatGPT is also not a financial advisor. You should always review the results before relying on them or sharing them with others. That's a sensible reminder everyone should keep in mind.
