ChatGPT Is Growing Rapidly: 700 Million Users—and What Comes Next?
OpenAI announced that ChatGPT will reach 700 million weekly active users this week. That represents a 40 percent increase from 500 million at the end of March and four times as many as during the same period last year. This rapid rise is reminiscent of the adoption of platforms such as Zoom during the pandemic or early social networks. Nick Turley, OpenAI's vice president of product for ChatGPT, shared the news on the social network X, noting that every day, people and teams are learning, creating, and solving increasingly complex problems. According to available information from OpenAI, this milestone is part of a broader trend in which ChatGPT is becoming not only a tool for individuals but also a key component of corporate and government processes.
Preparations for the Release of GPT-5
OpenAI plans to release GPT-5 soon, potentially as early as the beginning of August. This model will not be just a minor update—according to people familiar with the project, it will integrate advanced reasoning capabilities from the o3 series directly into the main GPT platform. Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, described GPT-5 as a system that brings many of the company's technologies together into a single whole. This step is intended to reduce user confusion about choosing models for different tasks and create a more powerful unified system. However, Altman cautioned that the model would not reach the "gold level of capabilities" immediately after launch, but only after several months.
Enterprise Success and Financial Growth
ChatGPT now serves 5 million paying enterprise customers, up from 3 million in June. More than 3 billion messages are sent on the platform every day, demonstrating not only a growing number of users but also deeper engagement. This trend is driving OpenAI's annual recurring revenue to $13 billion, up from $10 billion in June, with estimates suggesting it could exceed $20 billion by the end of the year. The company recently secured $8.3 billion in funding, valuing it at $300 billion. These funds support massive infrastructure investments, including a $30 billion annual data center lease from Oracle and an $11.9 billion deal with CoreWeave.
Competition
OpenAI faces strong competition from rivals such as Google, Meta, and Anthropic. For example, Google reports 2 billion monthly users for its AI Overviews product and 450 million for the Gemini app. Anthropic is seeking up to $5 billion in funding at a valuation of $170 billion. Meta continues to develop its Llama models, while Elon Musk's xAI is attracting attention. This race is fueling a battle for talent—Microsoft, for example, has hired more than 20 employees from Google's DeepMind team, including former Gemini engineering chief Amar Subramanya.
Focus on User Well-Being and Safety
OpenAI is also focusing on optimizing ChatGPT for user well-being. It recently introduced features such as break reminders and improved support in difficult situations, with the goal of helping users use their time effectively. This initiative responds to growing concerns about the psychological and societal impacts of AI. When GPT-5 launches, variants such as mini and nano versions will be available through the OpenAI API, allowing developers and companies to customize them according to their needs.
This milestone of 700 million users signals how AI is becoming a mainstream tool in business, education, and creative fields. OpenAI is thus strengthening its position while competitors strive to catch up.
