Although system prompts are one of the most effective tools for optimizing work with artificial intelligence, surprisingly few users actively use them. This situation is paradoxical because a properly configured system prompt can dramatically improve the quality and relevance of AI model responses, save time on repetitive tasks, and ensure a consistent communication style. The problem lies partly in the fact that many AI users are completely unaware that system prompts exist or do not understand their potential. Instead, they rely on basic queries and often frustratingly repeat the same instructions in every new conversation. Yet configuring a system prompt once could solve most of these problems.

What Are System Prompts and How Do They Work?

System prompts can be defined as specific text instructions that fall within the broader category of "presets" or "context" and are included in every message sent to an AI model. Their primary function is to determine how the AI should behave throughout the conversation. When using the API, the "system" parameter allows users to customize the model's behavior according to their specific needs.

In the Claude.ai web interface and mobile applications, the system prompt is fixed by Anthropic and cannot be changed by users, while API users have full control over its configuration. For general users, there is a dedicated field for system prompts at console.anthropic.com, where they can experiment with different settings. Different AI platforms offer varying levels of system prompt customization. While some services provide full control over the system prompt, others have it fixed or allow only limited modifications. When choosing an AI tool, it is therefore important to consider what level of control over system prompts you need.

Modern AI systems often include integrated tools for various tasks. For example, analytical tools are typically implemented as a "sandboxed JavaScript runtime environment" rather than an actual REPL (Read-Eval-Print Loop). This environment executes code snippets independently without maintaining state between calls, provides access to browser-like APIs, and supports ES6 imports, although it is not a Node.js environment and lacks persistent data storage capabilities. Search tools in AI systems often use alternative search engines instead of Google, which may explain certain limitations in query syntax. Claude AI, for example, supports various response styles such as Concise, Explanatory, or Formal, which can be activated through the system prompt and special tags. An effective system prompt may include instructions for:

  • Setting the communication style (formal, informal, technical)

  • Specific instructions for different types of tasks
  • Safety and ethical restrictions

Security Considerations

The security aspects of system prompts are crucial, especially in professional environments. System prompts in commercial AI systems typically include rules related to the principles of being "helpful, harmless, honest." Models are also programmed not to reveal details of their system prompt to the user unless directly relevant to the query, which is an important security feature. System prompts are most commonly used in professional environments for:

  • Automating repetitive tasks
  • Ensuring a consistent communication style across a team
  • Specializing AI in a specific field or discipline
  • Setting specific output formats
  • Implementing company standards and procedures

For example, a developer can configure a system prompt that instructs the AI to always comment code in a particular style and follow specific programming conventions. A copywriter, on the other hand, can set up a prompt to ensure a consistent brand voice across all content.

The Importance of Sharing Experience and Best Practices

Sharing effective system prompts within professional communities can significantly improve the productivity of all AI users and lead to the discovery of new ways to use these technologies. Individual users' experiences with different prompting approaches can provide valuable insights to the entire community and contribute to a better understanding of the capabilities and limitations of current AI systems. Unfortunately, a culture of prompt sharing is only beginning to emerge. Many organizations are not even aware of the potential of a systematic approach to system prompts or consider their prompts to be trade secrets, which hinders the development of best practices in this area.

The situation surrounding system prompts illustrates a phenomenon in the field of AI: rapid technological development often outpaces collective knowledge about how to use it optimally. While the technical capabilities exist and are relatively advanced, established practices and collective wisdom are developing more slowly. To make the most of AI's potential, it is therefore essential to pay more attention to system prompts and actively experiment with their capabilities. The time invested in understanding and creating high-quality system prompts will quickly pay off in the form of increased productivity, higher-quality outputs, and time saved in everyday work with AI tools.
