Jeff Bezos, the founder and former CEO of Amazon, is returning to the role of chief executive after four years. This time, he is joining a new artificial intelligence startup called Project Prometheus. Bezos will lead the company alongside Vik Bajaj as co-founder and co-CEO. The news came to light through information from anonymous sources cited by The New York Times.
Bezos stepped down as Amazon's CEO in 2021, but he is now returning to action with a project that has major ambitions under his leadership. The company has already secured a massive $6.2 billion in funding, equivalent to roughly CZK 145.7 billion. That is a sum many companies are unable to raise over their entire existence.
What Is Project Prometheus?
Project Prometheus focuses on developing artificial intelligence for the physical economy, specifically for engineering and manufacturing across various industries. The company plans to apply AI in sectors such as computers, aerospace, automobiles, and spacecraft. Its goal is to create AI models that operate in more complex ways than standard large language models, such as the one powering ChatGPT.
The company wants to enable robots to improve at performing tasks autonomously, as well as to observe and conduct scientific experiments on a large scale. There is speculation that the technology could enhance humanoid robots in the workplace or assist in their development. Bezos has experience in this field—he recently invested $400 million (approximately CZK 9.4 billion) in Physical Intelligence, a San Francisco startup focused on improving robots' capabilities.
Team and Funding
Project Prometheus has already hired more than 100 employees, many of whom came from leading companies such as OpenAI, DeepMind, Meta, Microsoft, and Nvidia. The founding members have extensive experience in AI and robotics. Co-founder Vik Bajaj is a physicist and chemist known for his work at Google's X lab, where he founded the healthcare startup Verily.
It is unclear how long the company has existed or where it will be headquartered. Bezos, who is the third-richest person in the world, has focused in recent years on his space company Blue Origin, where he is the founder and sole shareholder. This new role is his first formal position since leaving Amazon.
Intense Competition
Project Prometheus is entering a crowded artificial intelligence market where billions of dollars are being poured into AI startups. At the same time, questions are emerging about the financial sustainability of the industry as a whole. For example, investor Michael Burry, known for predicting the 2008 mortgage crisis, recently bet $1 billion (approximately CZK 23.5 billion) that shares of Palantir and Nvidia would fall. He accused some major technology companies of using accounting tricks to artificially inflate profits.
Bezos and Bajaj therefore face fierce competition, but with this level of funding and such a team, they have a chance to bring innovation to manufacturing and engineering.
