Amazon Is Building a Giant AI Complex with the Power of the Human Brain!

Amazon is building a giant data center complex called Project Rainier on nearly 5 000 0000 m2 of former farmland in northern Indiana. The facility is intended exclusively to support AI models from Anthropic, the developer of the Claude chatbot. A total of 30 data centers are to be built gradually—seven have been completed so far.

The scale of the investment is staggering. Amazon has hired four different construction companies that are working simultaneously on various parts of the complex. “I don’t know whether they’re competing for money or steaks for dinner, but it’s crazy how much they’re stepping up,” local economic development official Bill Schalliol told the NYT.

The goal is to create an AI model that will be as powerful, complex, and perhaps even as intelligent as the human brain. Amazon has already invested up to 4 billion dollars in Anthropic and is planning a similar complex in Mississippi as well.

Proprietary Technology vs. the Competition

Amazon is betting on its own Trainium 2 accelerators instead of Nvidia’s most advanced chips. This strategy is intended to reduce cooling costs—it relies on large air-handling units and municipal water instead of complex cooling equipment.

Even so, the complex will consume 2.2 gigawatts of electricity—enough energy to power the lights in millions of homes. It is in direct competition with Meta and OpenAI, which are building their own next-generation infrastructure.

Environmental Problems and Local Opposition

The ambitious plans are encountering serious environmental problems. Local residents are already protesting against several aspects of the project:

Water problems: During construction, Amazon pumped out so much water that local wells began to dry up. The complex will continue to consume enormous quantities of water for cooling, placing pressure on local water resources.

Destruction of nature: Part of a wetland area had to be bulldozed and redeveloped, and approximately 5 million m2 of formerly productive farmland has now been built over. The traditional agricultural landscape is being transformed into an industrial complex.

Despite environmental concerns, the project is bringing thousands of jobs during both construction and subsequent operation, as well as increased tax revenue for the region. Indiana is thus becoming one of the centers of the American AI industry.
