New scientific research reveals how generative artificial intelligence (AI) is fundamentally changing the basic principles of collaboration in professional environments. A large-scale experiment conducted at Procter & Gamble offers a fascinating look at how AI is transforming performance, knowledge sharing, and the social aspects of teamwork.

A Revolution in Team Collaboration

Teamwork has long been considered the cornerstone of modern organizations. Traditional teams bring together diverse experts who work together to solve complex problems better than individuals can. However, new research conducted by an international team of scientists from prestigious institutions such as Harvard Business School, the Wharton School, and ESSEC Business School shows that generative AI can dramatically change this dynamic.

The researchers organized a large-scale experiment with 776 Procter & Gamble professionals who worked on real-world innovation tasks in the area of new product development. Participants were randomly divided into four groups:

Individuals working without AI
Two-person teams working without AI
Individuals working with AI
Two-person teams working with AI

Surprising Results

The results of the experiment produced several surprising findings:

1. AI Enables Individuals to Match the Performance of Teams

Individuals using AI achieved the same solution quality as two-person teams without AI. This suggests that artificial intelligence can effectively replace some of the advantages of human collaboration. "AI can serve as a true virtual collaborator, providing diverse perspectives and knowledge that would otherwise require multiple people," the study's authors explain.

2. AI Breaks Down Expertise Boundaries

Without artificial intelligence, research and development professionals tended to design technically oriented solutions, while commercial professionals preferred market-focused solutions. However, when participants used AI, these differences diminished - both groups created more balanced proposals regardless of their professional backgrounds.

"AI effectively democratizes expertise," the study states. "It enables people to go beyond the boundaries of their specialization and approach problems more comprehensively."

3. AI Improves the Emotional Experience of Work

Surprisingly, participants using AI reported more positive emotional reactions while solving tasks. They felt greater enthusiasm and energy, along with less anxiety and frustration. This effect was even stronger than the positive emotional impact of traditional teamwork.

Implications for Organizations

These findings have far-reaching implications for the future of work:

"Organizations will need to reconsider the optimal size and composition of teams," the researchers warn. "If AI-supported individuals can achieve the same results as traditional teams, this opens up possibilities for more flexible and efficient organizational structures."

However, the study also revealed that when seeking truly exceptional solutions (in the top 10% of ratings), teams working with AI achieved the best results. This suggests that for the highest levels of creativity and innovation, the optimal approach may be a combination of human collaboration and AI support.

A New Era of "Cyber Teams"

The researchers call this new model a "cyber collaborator" - referring to the theory of cybernetics, which describes systems capable of dynamically adapting their behavior based on feedback.

"AI is no longer merely a passive tool, but an active participant in team dynamics," the authors conclude. "It provides immediate feedback, bridges expertise boundaries, and influences emotional states - functions that we have traditionally associated with human collaborators."

Looking to the Future

The study raises a number of important questions for future research: How do the benefits of AI integration evolve as users gain more experience? Which functions of AI systems specifically support effective knowledge sharing? And how will AI integration affect the development of expertise over the long term?

One thing is certain - the coming era of "cyber teams" will require new ways of understanding the changing relationship between human and machine contributions, as well as a new science of cyber collaboration.
