Smart Glasses: A Battle of Tech Giants – Meta vs. ByteDance
We are witnessing the rapid development of wearable technologies, with the smart glasses segment representing one of the most exciting areas of innovation. In this article, we will take a look at the latest Meta Smart Glasses and what is known about the upcoming AI glasses from ByteDance, the owner of the popular TikTok platform.
Technical Specifications and Features
Meta (formerly Facebook), in cooperation with the legendary Ray-Ban brand, has made significant progress in developing its smart glasses. Their latest model represents a major upgrade over the previous generation and brings functionality that is increasingly approaching science-fiction visions of augmented reality available to the general public. The new Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses are equipped with an ultra-wide 12MP camera, representing a significant leap over the 5MP sensor in the previous generation. The camera now supports portrait mode, automatic exposure, and face detection. Video can be recorded at a resolution of up to 1920 x 1440 pixels, ensuring high-quality recordings of everyday moments. In terms of audio equipment, the glasses offer custom open-ear speakers that provide better bass and higher volume than previous models. A five-microphone system enables spatial audio recording and advanced ambient noise cancellation, which you will appreciate both during phone calls and when using voice control. Storage has been dramatically increased to 32 GB (the previous generation had just 4 GB), allowing users to store more than 100 thirty-second videos or over 500 photos. Connectivity is provided via Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.3, delivering a faster and more stable connection. Battery life is up to 36 hours in total with the charging case, which provides eight additional charges. The glasses themselves have a relatively small battery with a capacity of approximately 154 mAh. Fast charging is supported – up to 50% capacity in approximately 20 minutes. In terms of water resistance, the glasses have an IPX4 rating, meaning they are resistant to splashing water but are not fully waterproof.
Artificial Intelligence as a Key Component
The most interesting aspect of the new Meta glasses is undoubtedly the integration of artificial intelligence. The voice-activated "Hey Meta" assistant enables hands-free control – you can ask questions, obtain information, translate languages while walking, or scan QR codes without having to take out your phone. The 2025 update introduced the new "Look & Ask" AI tools, which use the camera to identify objects or landmarks or answer questions about what you are currently seeing. In the near future, real-time translation features should also be added (currently, the glasses support reading and translating text). Content sharing is also easier than ever – you can take photos or videos directly from the glasses and share them instantly using a voice command, or livestream to Facebook or Instagram without needing to have a phone nearby for basic functions.
Design and Customization
Meta offers more than 150 custom combinations of frames and lenses. The glasses are compatible with prescription lenses and are available in the classic Wayfarer style as well as the new Headliner style, both in several color variants. This variety allows users to choose a design that best matches their personal style.
Price and Availability in the Czech Republic
The standard Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses model starts at USD 299 (approximately CZK 6,900 as of May 2025). Later this year, a premium "Hypernova" model with a built-in display is expected to be launched at a higher price. As for availability in the Czech Republic, the situation is not entirely clear. Official availability lists currently do not include the Czech Republic among the primarily supported countries. Some sources mention planned availability in various European countries, including France, Germany, Italy, and Sweden, but direct delivery or purchase in the Czech Republic has not yet been explicitly confirmed. It is possible that the glasses will be available through third parties and importers, such as Alza.

ByteDance AI Smart Glasses: A Competitor on the Horizon
While Meta continues to improve its smart glasses, another major player is preparing to enter the market. ByteDance, the Chinese company behind the global phenomenon TikTok, is reportedly working on its own AI smart glasses. Official information is still limited, but ByteDance is expected to draw on its experience with artificial intelligence and algorithmic content processing to create a competing product. The company could benefit from its strong position in social media and entertainment, particularly among younger users. The ByteDance glasses are expected to target TikTok content creators, with advanced features for capturing and sharing short videos. They could also offer innovative ways of interacting with the TikTok platform through augmented reality. In terms of availability on the European market, including the Czech Republic, the situation remains unclear. Given the regulatory challenges ByteDance faces in some Western countries.
The Future Within Reach
Smart glasses represent a fascinating direction in the development of wearable technology, blurring the boundary between our physical world and the digital space. With the latest generation of its glasses, Meta has taken a significant step toward the practical use of augmented reality in everyday life. ByteDance’s planned entry into this segment suggests that competition will be intense, which should lead to faster innovation and potentially more affordable prices for consumers. For Czech customers, the question remains when and how these products will officially become available on our market. In the meantime, it is possible to purchase them through third parties or while traveling to countries where these products are officially distributed. As augmented reality and artificial intelligence technologies continue to develop, we can expect future generations of smart glasses to offer even more impressive features that will further transform the way we interact with the digital world.
