Gemini lets users create and edit files directly in chat

Google announced on October 29, 2026, that Gemini app users can create, preview and edit files directly in chat. The update covers documents, PDFs, presentations and spreadsheets; PDF preview and editing also work on mobile.

Manual edits and questions about selected text

Users can expand a file to full screen and type changes directly. They can also highlight text to ask Gemini a question about it or request edits to the file.

In a video, Google demonstrates creating a PDF study guide from uploaded handwritten lecture notes. The guide can then be edited manually, while Gemini can be asked to change text or visuals in selected sections and answer follow-up questions.

Formats supported on web and mobile

PDF preview and editing are supported on both the web and mobile. Google Docs, Google Sheets, presentations, Markdown, TXT and code are supported only on the web.

The features are available to all users in every language in which the Gemini app is available.
