Elon Musk, head of xAI, has come up with an idea for an interesting match. He proposed that his Grok 5 artificial intelligence take on the best human League of Legends team in 2026. He shared the idea on X, where he outlined the rules in detail to ensure a fair match. Grok 5 would have to play under restrictions designed to bring it closer to human capabilities—no superhuman reaction speeds or special advantages.

In his post on X, Musk wrote that Grok 5 would only be able to view the game through a camera pointed at the monitor, just like a person with normal 20/20 vision. Its reaction time and clicking speed would have to be at the level of an average person, not faster. This means the artificial intelligence would not have access to data directly from the game but would have to rely on what it can "see" and how quickly it can react. Musk proposed this as a test of whether Grok 5 can outperform human players in real time.

Reactions from professionals

The idea quickly caught the attention of the esports community. Former professional player Eugene "Pobelter" Park responded positively. He offered to help the xAI team and said he was interested in comparing it with past artificial intelligence achievements, such as OpenAI's bots in Dota 2. Park sees it as an opportunity to demonstrate how far artificial intelligence has progressed in gaming.

Another response came from Oriol Vinyals, an artificial intelligence researcher who previously reached Grandmaster level in StarCraft. Vinyals suggested that Grok 5 try that game as well, and even mentioned that it would be great if the Optimus robot operated the mouse and keyboard. Musk responded in agreement, suggesting that the idea could be expanded to other games.

Not everyone is so optimistic, however. Former professional player Joedat "Voyboy" Esfahani doubts that Grok 5 will be able to handle complex aspects of the game, such as teamwork and reading the situation on the map. According to him, League of Legends requires deep coordination, which artificial intelligence may not be able to achieve at the highest level. Yiliang "Doublelift" Peng is similarly skeptical, declaring that Grok 5 could not beat even him, let alone a team like T1. He jokingly promised to shave his head if the artificial intelligence won.

T1 and Riot Games get involved

T1, considered one of the best teams in League of Legends, responded to the challenge immediately. They posted a GIF of player Faker on X with the words "We are ready! R U?" This signals that they are willing to participate in the match and take it seriously. T1 has a strong record at world tournaments, so it would be a truly tough challenge for Grok 5.

Riot Games, the company that develops League of Legends, has also expressed interest. Co-founder Marc Merrill replied directly to Musk on X with the words "Let's talk." This suggests that Riot Games sees potential in the idea and could help organize the event. Nothing has been confirmed yet, but the responses from players, teams, and developers suggest that the match could take place.

A scientific experiment

This idea is not just about entertainment. Grok 5 is a large language model from xAI that learns from vast amounts of data. Restricting it to human conditions would test how well artificial intelligence can process information in real time, make quick decisions, and work as part of a team.
