AI Drone Swarms Set to Change the Future of Warfare
Auterion announced that it has raised $130 million in its second funding round. This amount, equivalent to CZK 3 billion, is intended to accelerate the development and deployment of its software for autonomous defense systems. The goal is to move from individual drones to coordinated swarms operating across air, land, and maritime environments. Auterion, headquartered in Arlington, Virginia, with offices in Zurich and Munich and personnel in Kyiv, is thus testing drones in the best possible location.
According to founder and CEO Lorenz Meier, the future of warfare is defined by software, unmanned systems, and mass production. "The decisive advantage on the battlefield will not come from individual drones, but from autonomous masses," Meier said. The company plans to expand production of its AuterionOS platform and Nemyx defense system, enabling democratic governments around the world to deploy these capabilities at scale.

Investors Including Governments
The funding round was led by Bessemer Venture Partners, whose partner Alex Ferrara will join Auterion's board of directors. Existing investors such as Lakestar, Mosaic Ventures, and Costanoa Ventures also participated. Of the total $130 million, $25 million comes from non-dilutive capital provided by the U.S. Department of Defense's Office of Strategic Capital through Rochefort. This support underscores how Auterion's technology will become crucial to allies of the United States.
The company's valuation after this round exceeded $600 million (CZK 13.8 billion), making it one of the most significant investments ever in drone operating systems. Ferrara emphasized that the war in Ukraine has demonstrated how advances in artificial intelligence combined with affordable hardware enable new defensive and offensive capabilities at a lower cost. Auterion is therefore at the forefront of the defense industry's transition from manual production in peacetime to mass production in wartime.

How AuterionOS and Nemyx Work
The AuterionOS platform transforms individual drones into coordinated swarms, allowing a single operator to control fleets from different manufacturers as a unified whole. This open system ensures cross-platform interoperability and adds features such as AI-powered autonomous decision-making, secure communications, and edge computing capabilities. The drones can therefore lock onto targets and complete missions even when GPS or video links are jammed, which has been tested under real combat conditions.
The Skynode X system, a fully integrated autopilot and mission computer, can be added to any drone running AuterionOS. Its price is comparable to consumer electronics, yet it offers performance that meets defense standards, enabling even smaller nations and organizations to deploy powerful autonomous fleets. Unlike closed systems that lock customers into a single supplier, Auterion's open architecture supports collaboration with major defense companies such as Rheinmetall and Lockheed Martin, as well as aerospace manufacturers in the U.S., Europe, and allied nations.

Deployment in Ukraine and Global Impact
Auterion's technology is already deployed in Ukraine, where it supports autonomous drone operations in active combat. Under a recent Pentagon contract, the company is supplying tens of thousands of AI-powered strike kits to Ukrainian forces. In July 2025, Auterion signed a $50 million contract to deliver 33,000 of these kits by the end of the year. Meier emphasizes that the technology remains under human control, especially when making targeting decisions, and serves to support democratic states against authoritarian threats.
Russia's invasion of Ukraine accelerated the need for mass drone production, where low costs make it possible to overwhelm defense systems with swarm attacks. Auterion is thus helping allies gain an advantage by combining artificial intelligence with commercial technologies. This approach not only increases efficiency but also democratizes access to advanced autonomous systems, changing the dynamics of modern conflicts. With this investment, Auterion is becoming a leader in creating drone swarms that could determine the outcome of future battles.
